Saint John's AME Church | A Historic Landmark

Saint John's AME Church was the first African American Episcopal Church in Virginia and was founded in 1840 within old Cumberland Street Methodist Episcopal Church.  In 1848, the land that the present edifice stands was purchased.

Saint John's has long been referred to as the "Historic St. John's."  On June 26, 1983, an application was submitted to the Division of Historic Landmarks of the Commonwealth of Virginia and our beloved church was added to the National Register of Historic Places.  On Sunday, April 12, 1987, retired Congressman, G. William Whitehurst, presented to the church a plaque, which declared that St. John's AME Church had been certified as a historic landmark.
